The Google Over-Optimization Penalty

Google Over-Optimization Penalty

The Google Over Optimization penalty is a new development in the online business world.   The company is trying to crack down on web sites which use excessive methods to gain a high search engine ranking..   In a business such as affiliate marketing, search engine optimization (SEO) is a key method in getting traffic to your blog or web site. Google search results are very important in this aspect.

When someone types in a search on Google, an online business want their website to be on the first page of search results.

Search engine optimizers know this fact!

Google knows this as well.  They realize that companies and individuals want a high ranking and they know that there are many questionable methods of achieving the best results.

Google Hates Spam!

Such As?

Making lots of backlinks through dime-a-dozen, iffy linking sites. Excessive article marketing. Keyword stuffing. Ghost pages where white keywords appear on a white background.  And so on.

Google Panda was created to deal with this but now comes another weapon in Google’s arsenal.

Google Over Optimization Penalty

It definitely sounds a lot more serious than Google Panda, which was named after Google engineer Navneet Panda. However, people think of cute and cuddly black-and-white bears as opposed to a search engine control system.

‘Penalty’ sounds a lot more menacing than ‘panda’, doesn’t it?  Google is trying to let people know that it’s serious about cracking down on web sites abusing the search engine system.

At a recent South By Southwest (SXSW), Google’s Matt Cutts had a few remarks which were widely quoted on the internet:

“We are trying to level the playing field a bit. All those people doing, for lack of a better word, over optimization or overly SEO – versus those making great content and great site. We are trying to make GoogleBot smarter, make our relevance better, and we are also looking for those who abuse it, like too many keywords on a page, or exchange way too many links or go well beyond what you normally expect. We have several engineers on my team working on this right now.” [1]

Sounds Scary!

Not totally. Google knows that web site owners will naturally try to make their presence more visible on the web. They also know that a blog or article has to have the relevant keywords or else people will never find it.

Don’t let this happen!

If you are marketing weight loss pills, you will naturally include the term ‘weight loss pills’ in your article or site.

But, if every paragraph repeats the term ad nauseum, such as ‘Weight loss pills are very important for your health. My weight loss pills are more effective than most other weight loss pills on the market so buy my weight loss pills today! …’, then Google has an problem with the excess use of the term.

They will de-index web sites which they find to be manipulating the search engine field.

They don’t really have the authority to ban a site from the internet, but de-indexing a web page has pretty well the same effect. Unless people know your domain name address somehow, there’s no way they can find you if the search engines won’t list you.

What Can I Do?

There are a few ways to avoid any penalties from Google.  One important way is to make sure your blog or web site has very rich, useful content that people will pay attention to.  Google measures the time that people spend at your site.  Fewer people coming to your site and spending a lot of time there is more valuable than a lot of people coming to your site and immediately leaving.  If Google detects that visitors spend very little time at your web page, they`ll be suspicious.

Do lots of research online and keep updated with all new developments.. Find out what the latest news is with Google and their search engine updates. If you see a blog or article about the subject, always look at the comments section below it. There’s often a lot of useful input from readers who have some valuable nuggets of information.

Google has a webmaster guidelines page which you should definitely check out.  After all, they’re the search engine who’ll be ranking you!

Use social media as much as possible.  SEO is important but social engine ranking is valuable as well.   Followers on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Google+ and other social media sites have a lot of value.  Why?  they have a more personal connection with your site and you.  References and word-of-mouth from people which promote your site have more clout than people who learn about you simply through a search engine result.

Social Media

Use Social Media!

Make a Facebook page.  Set up a Twitter account.  Go to Google+ and set up a profile.  Make videos on Youtube that show YOU in action.  Let people get to know who you are!  Social media means ‘social’!  Who would you trust more? A friend who recommends a business to you or a search engine result?

Don’t overuse keywords!  In some instances, that could be hard to avoid.  An article about Facebook might naturally have the term ‘Facebook’ used throughout the post but don’t saturate a term like ‘weight loss pill’, as mentioned above.

Avoid online firms which promise you hundreds or thousands of backlinks.  Even if they could do so, chances are those link generators are spam sites.

Learn, learn and learn some more.  You can never know too much about the online business world, search engines and social media!
