Meet-Up groups are a very useful tool for Network Marketing. Meetup.com has been around for many years and has 9.5 million members meeting 280,000 times a time throughout the world in over 45,000 cities.
Why is that?
Because people love to meet!
It’s great for social gatherings and for networking and to bring people together that have a common interest. That shared interest can be music, eating out, wine-tasting, art appreciation, sports events and just about every category you can name, 90,000 in all!.
As a network marketer, Meetup.com should be used.
Network Marketing Involves *Networking*
Networking means that you have to meet people. Sure, you can meet people online and try to get traffic to your blog or web site through search engine optimization, but nothing compares to meeting people face-to-face and getting them to KNOW you.
Network marketing is a ‘people profession’. It’s not really easy to leave the computer and go out and meet people but we have to go offline once in a while.
People join people, not a business and they will join people that they have gotten to know.
Remember, people buy from those whom they like, respect, trust and know. This applies best to people that they MEET and meetup.com is a great way to let this happen.
Getting Starting With Meetup.com
Meetup is free to use and very easy to join. All you need is an email address.
If you want to organize meetup groups, you will have to pay $72/year but we’ll focus on simply joining groups here.
First, go to http://www.meetup.com and look for the ‘Sign Up’ icon on the top left.
Once there, a pop-up will appear, asking for your name, email address, password and location.
The location is important because you want the meetup locations to be in your area, unless you’re willing to travel very long distances!
After You’ve Signed Up
Now that you’re in, simply find the topic that interests you. Network marketing is a primary focus for for meet-up groups since you want to network with like-minded people.
As you can see in the image, you can pick a variety of topics from hiking to pugs.
That’s fine if you want to join a hiking club or perhaps learn some French . It doesn’t hurt to enjoy some activities as well and you may meet people who might be interested in your business once you get to know them.
It’s not the easiest thing to meet people and talk about your business, but that isn’t the point with Meetup groups.
The point is to build up a relationship with people.
Don’t talk about your business at the meetup event.
BUILD A RELATIONSHIP!
I know what you’re saying. “What’s the point of going if I won’t get any business leads or make sales??”
You will, but you have to get to know the person and let them get to know you.
Back To Network Marketing
Typing in ‘Network Marketing’ and your postal code will lead to a few network marketing groups in your area.
Let’s look at two examples in the image below:
The first group has 8 members and no meetups planned in the near future.
The second group has 302 members (‘Kickstarters’) and has a monthly meetup.
Which group would you rather join?
That’s right!’ Look for large groups which have regular meetings.
Better yet, use the link boxes that you are given:
The groups with the most members will give you the most people to meet.
However, the newest groups are also ideal if you are shy about joining a large, established group.
We know it can be very intimidating to go to a large social gathering and not know anybody, especially if everyone knows each other!
A new group will be much smaller but you should probably go to these first and get your feet wet, so to speak. Arrive early at the meeting so that there will be a smaller group and you can get to know everyone there much more easily.
As people start to arrive, you can introduce yourself to them one at a time.
Network marketing is the category that you want but be sure to use other topics which will yield similar results. If you look back at the image, you can see other relevant categories:
- Work at Home
- Business Networking
- Business Referral Networking
- Social Networking
- Startup Ventures/Businesses
If there aren’t any network marketing groups getting together in your area, then try the other categories. There is a very good chance that there will be several business networking meetings taking place in your area.
These will be people who are looking to create and expand their own business opportunities.
Exchange business cards and do a follow-up. You can email or phone them and arrange to meet at a coffee shop.
Keep in mind that you want to follow up with qualified people who will earn success.
Think of it this way: follow up with people with whom you can picture sitting by a pool in Costa Rica, toasting your financial success!
Most coffees shops have Wi-Fi connections so bring a laptop with your presentation on it.
Follow-ups are important. Less than 5% of people will follow up after a meeting so be sure to use those business cards at the meet-ups and make contacts.
